Basketball Hoop Buying Guide
When looking for a home basketball system for you and your family, there are some things to consider to be sure you get the best option for your situation. Your family’s enjoyment, safety and development are key factors, possibly more than monetary investment because with this type of sporting equipment you really do get what you pay for.

Some factors to consider when deciding on which type of basketball hoop will be best for your family include how much recreational space do you have available, how do you plan to use the basketball system, what are the ages of the people planning to use the system, and how much money are you willing to invest in this system?
Portable basketball goals

This type of system has a fairly large base filled with sand or water that creates its stability. It takes up more space than an in-ground system. The portable base oftentimes comes with wheels that allows for the players to position the system in the desired location and then put it back to a storage position fairly easily. This is a good choice for those who may not want a long-term basketball hoop, but do want something convenient for the short-term.

The advantages to this system is that it is easy to assemble, great for kids, and is portable enough to allow you to move the hoop virtually anywhere you choose.

The disadvantage is that it is not as stable as an in-ground or wall-mounted system, the backboards are usually smaller, and you can’t dunk safely on this type of system.

These systems can come with an adjustable height feature, or you can get them at a fixed height.

In-Ground basketball goals

This type of system is permanently in-ground through cementing, so when choosing this system make sure it’s your long-term solution. In-ground systems are more sturdy and require less space than portable systems. This is a good choice for someone who is more serious about being able to practice basketball and are wanting something that will last a long time. One thing to consider when installing and in-ground system, pay attention to your nearby landscaping to make sure trees, bushes or shrubs that are small now will not grow to interfere with the placement of your basketball system.

The advantages of this type of system are that it will last a long time with little maintenance or upkeep, it’s extremely durable and it’s the closest to professional basketball quality.

This system also comes as adjustable height or fixed height.

Adjustable height vs. fixed height

Adjustable height systems are great when you have younger players who will be growing up and needing the system to grow taller with them. It’s also good when you are looking to learn to dunk the ball and need a lower basket to learn with. A fixed height system is more rigid and is better to use if frequent height adjustments are not necessary.

No matter which basketball system you choose for your family, it’s a great idea to make it a family venture. If you have kids excited about and wanting to get involved in basketball, installing a basketball system at your home is not only a great way to support their interest, but possibly also something you can enjoy together as a family as well.
